Eight booths, one long table
Slices opened in 1985 on the corner of King and Water, and it has been serving breakfast there every morning since. Eight booths, a couple of four-tops, one long table. Big windows onto King West. You grab your own tray, they call your order, and you sit wherever there's room.
In forty years the street outside has become a light rail line, a tech corridor and a construction site more than once. Inside, the coffee still gets refilled without you asking and the booths are the same booths.
Nobody has ever come here for the décor. They come for the home fries.
How the home fries get made
It takes all morning, and that's the point
Potatoes get boiled, hand-peeled, shaved, cooled, and then grilled in butter and seasoning until the edges go crisp and the middle stays soft. Five steps, every day, before most people are awake.
A bag of frozen hash browns would take four minutes and nobody would write a review about them. Forty years of customers have decided that's the difference.
One room, everybody in it

Any given morning it's students, seniors, cops, trades and the tech floors up the street — all in the same eight booths, paying the same prices, drinking the same coffee.
That mix is the whole character of the place, and it's what forty years on one downtown corner buys you.
